This article is focused on the following UN Sustainable Development Goal:
Gender inequality is the social phenomenon in which men and women are not treated equally. In most cases, women are treated unequally compared to men and it has been practiced for centuries around the world. According to the World Economic Forum, for the question “Have you experienced gender discrimination in the workplace”, 57% of women answered yes whereas only 10% of men answered yes to it. This data supports the claim that women are experiencing gender inequality more than men.
Not only gender discrimination but also gender inequality leads to a lot of social issues and it has an effect on everyone’s life. Girls are at risk of going to school and getting an education, but prone to child marriage between the girl and man, which is prevalent, and gender-based violence, such as prenatal sex selection, female infanticide, neglect, female genital mutilation, rape, and forced prostitution occurs. Even though there are a lot of people who are still in trouble, these social problems are gradually being revealed throughout the media. To make things better, there are a lot of organisations existing to fight for women's rights which I would like to highlight.
UNWOMEN
UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. They work with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programs, and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide, focusing on their four strategies;
Women lead, participate in, and benefit equally from governance systems.
Women have income security, decent work, and economic autonomy.
All women and girls live a life free from all forms of violence.
Women and girls contribute to and have greater influence in building sustainable peace and resilience, and benefit equally from the prevention of natural disasters and conflicts and humanitarian action.
2. ICRW(The International Center for Research on Women)
ICRW identifies women’s contributions as well as the obstacles that prevent them from being economically strong and able to participate in society fully. They also translate these insights into a path of action that honors women’s human rights, ensures gender equality, and creates conditions in which all women can thrive. ICRW's mission is to empower women, advance gender equality, and fight poverty in the developing world. To accomplish this, ICRW works with partners to conduct empirical research, build capacity, and advocate for evidence-based, practical ways to change policies and programs.
3. AWID(Association for Women's Rights in Development)
The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is a global, feminist, membership, movement-support organization. Their mission is to support feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements to thrive, to be a driving force in challenging systems of oppression, and to co-create feminist realities. Their aim is to;
Strengthen feminist, women’s rights, and gender justice movements so that they thrive.
Better prepare feminist, women’s rights, and gender justice movements to disrupt and delegitimize the influence of anti-rights actors and agendas in international spaces and systems.
Amplify feminist realities, proposals, and narratives that light a way forward.
They advance their work through campaigning for women’s rights, exchanging ideas/resources to co-create powerful agendas and processes, building partnerships, and working with artists who center feminist voices and the narratives of historically oppressed communities.
Remember, change starts with you.
