How Does Hunger Affect People Around the World?

This article is focused on the following UN Sustainable Development Goal:

Many people in the world don’t have to think about where their next meal comes from or if they’re going to eat the following day. Unfortunately, many children in numerous countries have to worry about this. In countries like Somalia, 50.5 percent of the population is starving, as well as in Yemen, where 45.1 percent of the population have no food to eat, in this countries many parents can’t provide food for their kids. there are two main reasons for this situation: either they dont have the resources to feed them or/and they don’t have the money. More than half of the people in these countries suffer from poverty. Many of them don’t have the privilege to wake up each morning and have food on the table, they are lucky to have even one meal a day.

The countries that have the highest rates of starvation are in Africa. The top four countries in the world right now are Somalia, Yemen, Central African Republic, and Chad. If you notice, all of these countries are extremely poor countries that don’t have access to any resources. Even if they did want to make their lives better, they simply can’t because their environment doesn't have enough resources to do so. Numbers show that between 7,745 and 19,701 people are dying daily as a result of acute hunger, and between 5 and 13 people die per minute. That’s one person dying every 12 seconds. More than 9 million people are dying in early ages, out of those 9 million people, 3.1 million are children.

“Hunger is not an issue of charity. It is an issue of justice.” — Jacques Diouf

Many people will say “Yeah we get that many people are dying with lack of food, but what can we do about it?” In retrospect, there's always something we can do about it. We could find and invest in various charities to help people that are in need. Countries can send supplies to developing countries that don’t have access to food and clean water. People could donate money to the ones that can't afford food. It’s not always about the country that you're living in, it sometimes has to do with how much food that country has. Many people can’t afford these costs. People don’t care about the state of others unless it affects them in some way. They believe that they don't need to care because they won't benefit at all. This is incorrect thinking as every little bit matters, even giving a small amount of food to a person on the street could go a long way.

In addition to the 9 million people that die from starvation each year, world hunger affected 828 million people in 2021 – 46 million people more than in 2020 and 150 million more than in 2019. Just because people are not dying from something does not mean they are not affected by it. Take as an example COVID. At the end of the day, we are all living in one world and we all need each other to survive. We need to help each other so that everyone have a chance to live with quality. We can't just continue being selfish.

Whenever you complain about not wanting to eat because you don’t like the food your parents made for you, or you throw away food because you are not hungry anymore, remember people are dying every day due to hunger issues. They don’t have enough resources to make and buy food. If you ever have leftovers, don’t be afraid to give it to someone who needs it more than you.

Remember, change starts with you.
